Project Plan
1. The Brief (negotiated by the Student and Tutor by e-mail).
I intend to photograph individual student study spaces within Orkney College in order to determine how the space is claimed and what affect this is intended to produce and how this projects an impression of the individual.
2. The Methodological Considerations (data gathering and analysis)
I will photograph individuals at their study spaces and ask each individual for a caption to put with the image. Using grounded theory and possibly elements of Goffman’s theory about the presentation of self I will analyse the images and look for recurrent themes and how these might relate to the text reference accompanying them
3. Equipment needs.
The equipment I will need is a camera, writing material and computer access.
4. Sample considerations.
As I am limited geographically my sample will be students within Orkney College main campus. As this is a large limitation I am unlikely to limit my sample selection further and this may mean that I find correlations between different age and gender groups.
5. Ethical Issues to be considered.
As I will be taking photographs within an institutional building I have asked the college principal for permission to take photographs, which was granted. In order to take photographs of the activity without any student preparation I intend to take each student’s photograph and then show them it before asking permission to use it. If permission is given I will give the student a copyright form and ask for a caption. If permission is declined I will delete the photograph with the student watching in order to guarantee that they feel secure that it will not be used. I have also submitted an ethics form to the tutor.
6. Restraints and Issues expected.
I expect to have a large number of students refuse permission and I also expect that some photographs will not be easy to take without the student being aware of what I am doing. I will also need to be very discrete and make sure that I am not disturbing anyone accessing a class as some students study wholly online and might be participating in a class at a study area.
